Why You’re Not Getting Picked by Agencies
If you’ve been applying to nanny agencies and not hearing back, it’s not random. There are a few clear reasons this happens, and the good news is, they’re all fixable once you know what to look for.
1. Your resume isn’t tailored to the family you want
Most nannies use one resume for everything. That’s where things fall apart. Agencies and families are not just looking for “experience with children”, they are looking for their person. A newborn care family is scanning for completely different details than a family with toddlers or school-aged kids.
If your resume feels generic, you blend in. If it speaks directly to the type of role you want, you stand out immediately.
The small details matter, how you describe your roles, what you highlight first, even the language you use.
2. You’re not communicating like a professional nanny
This shows up the most during interviews. You might have the experience, but if you’re not using the right language, it can come across as casual instead of professional.
There’s a big difference between someone who “helps with kids” and someone who understands structure, development, routines, and boundaries within someone else’s home. Agencies are trained to spot that difference fast.
The way you present yourself, how you answer questions, how you explain your approach, all of this builds trust or breaks it.
3. You’re not maximizing what makes you different
This is one of the biggest missed opportunities. Every nanny has something that sets them apart, but most don’t know how to position it.Maybe you have deep newborn experience. Maybe you’ve worked with multiples.
Maybe you’ve traveled with families. Maybe you specialize in a certain age group or routine-based care.If you don’t highlight it clearly, agencies won’t connect the dots for you. They will just move on to the next candidate who made it obvious.
